Design System

Providence Health is a large, multi-brand healthcare organization whose rapid growth through acquisitions created fragmented digital experiences across patient- and staff-facing products. By 2021, inconsistent UI patterns, accessibility risk, and duplicated engineering effort had become systemic issues. I was brought in to lead the strategy, design, and rollout of Providence’s first centralized design system.
I was Lead UX Designer and owned Providence’s first centralized design system, from audit through governance. I audited 200+ pages and flows, logged 140+ accessibility issues, and inventoried 180+ components and variants. Then I built a WCAG 2.1 AA token-based component library synced with front-end code. I was accountable for both design quality and long-term adoption.
Within the first year, component reuse increased by 54 percent and time to ship new pages decreased by approximately 30 percent. Accessibility defects reported post-launch dropped by 40 percent, significantly reducing compliance risk. Teams reported higher confidence in design decisions and faster cross-functional collaboration.
